Setup a BitBox02 Wallet

BitBox02, made by Swiss company Shift Crypto, connects to Sparrow over USB and adds one extra layer of protection most other hardware wallets skip: a pairing code you confirm on both screens the first time you connect.

Prerequisites

  • A BitBox02 device, already initialized and updated to the latest firmware via the BitBoxApp
  • Sparrow Wallet installed (Download)
  • The BitBoxApp fully closed before connecting to Sparrow (see note below)

Make sure the BitBoxApp is completely closed, not just minimized, before opening Sparrow. If it’s running in the background, it holds an exclusive connection to the device and Sparrow won’t be able to detect it.

Step 1: Create the Wallet in Sparrow

  1. Open Sparrow and click New Wallet on the welcome screen, giving it a name like “My BitBox02.”

  2. Choose Connect Hardware Wallet, then connect your BitBox02 to your computer via USB.

  3. Click Scan to have Sparrow detect the device.

Step 2: Unlock and Confirm the Pairing Code

  1. Enter your device password on the BitBox02 itself to unlock it.

  2. If this is your first time connecting this BitBox02 to Sparrow, both Sparrow and the BitBox02’s screen will display a pairing code. Check that both codes match before confirming — this protects against a compromised computer trying to impersonate your device.

Step 3: Import the Keystore

  1. Click the arrow next to Import Keystore to see your available accounts.

  2. For a standard single wallet, choose the first one — Keystore #0 — which corresponds to your first account in the BitBoxApp.

  3. Keep Policy Type set to Single Signature, and choose Native Segwit (P2WPKH) as the script type for lower fees on the modern address format.

  4. Click Apply, then Save.

Step 4: Receive Funds

Go to the Receive tab for a fresh address. As always, verify the address shown matches what’s displayed on the BitBox02’s own screen before sharing it for any significant amount.

Step 5: Send and Sign a Transaction

Go to Send, enter the destination and amount, and click Create Transaction. Sparrow will prompt your BitBox02 to sign — confirm the device is connected and unlocked. Review the address and amount on the BitBox02’s screen before approving with its touch sensor, then Sparrow broadcasts the transaction once signed.

Troubleshooting

Sparrow can’t find my BitBox02
Double-check the BitBoxApp is fully closed, not just running in the background — it holds an exclusive USB connection that blocks Sparrow from seeing the device.
The pairing codes don’t match
Do not confirm the pairing if the codes shown on Sparrow and on the BitBox02 differ — disconnect the device and try again. This mismatch is exactly the scenario the pairing step is designed to catch.
Which Keystore number should I import?
For a standard, single wallet setup, use Keystore #0 — this matches the first account shown in the BitBoxApp. Only pick a different number if you’re intentionally managing multiple separate accounts on the same device.
